Carrot tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small carrot is tattooed on the inner forearm, with the orange root pointing towards the elbow and feathery green leaves at the wrist end. The carrot is drawn with a dark outline and simple shading lines across the root, with flat orange and green fills. The background is a blurred bush of white flowers and green leaves, and the arm is shown in soft natural light.

The windfalls have started to split on the grass by the time you reach the bottom row, wasps working the sweet ones, and you kneel between the cordons where Aunt Winifred has grown carrots since before the orchard was sold off around her. The soil is grey and crumbly after a dry week. You loosen the bed with a fork the way she taught you, one prong at a time, and the first root comes up with a tug that surprises you.

It is a stubby, forked thing, nothing like the prize she promised, its feathery tops smelling of green pepper and dust. You hold it up to the light and the orange looks almost painted on. Winifred always said the carrots grown under the apples tasted of patience, because the trees drew the sugar down into the ground and kept it there until somebody was foolish enough to dig.
You carry the bunch to the back step in a tin bucket. She is already there, shelling broad beans into a colander, and she takes one look at your face and laughs. You had meant to say the carrot you pulled first was the best of the lot. Instead you admit the long one snapped halfway, and you ate the broken end standing in the rows when nobody was looking.
She holds out her hand for the bit you have left. 'Then you've had the sweet part,' she says, and gives you the next apple from her apron pocket to finish the job.
