Lavender sprigs on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm carries a tattoo of several lavender sprigs, with purple flower heads on thin green stems that trail diagonally down toward the wrist. The purple blooms have soft shading and the stems are drawn in fine green lines. The arm is held out beside a potted plant with variegated green leaves and a white mug, against a dark wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hettie had told the boy twice that lavender wanted cutting before the dew burned off, and twice he had come back with his sleeves full of stalks already gone soft in the sun. "Cut it where the green meets the grey," she said, and showed him, her thumb pressing the nick into the woody stem below the first pair of leaves. He nodded the way boys nod when they have stopped listening.

By the third week the drying shed under the Lodge wall smelt so strongly that the vicar complained of headaches in his study. Hettie hung the bundles head down from a wire strung between two beams, each one tied with a loop of garden twine. The purple heads hung like tassels. The stems came down thin and green and bent at the knuckle where the weight pulled them, and she said that was the only honest part of the plant, the part that showed how much it had to carry.

Dennis asked why she bothered with drying when the florist in Holt paid for fresh sprigs by the dozen. Hettie didn't answer straight away. She took a bundle down, rubbed a head between finger and thumb, and held her palm under his nose until he breathed in and squinted.

"Fresh is for selling," she said. "Dry keeps the summer in the drawer till Christmas."

Years later the shed was pulled down, but he still tucked a sprig into his shirt pocket each July, and the sachets he posted to her from the city always arrived smelling of the Lodge wall.
