Black line roses and foliage on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised forearm carries a cluster of open roses, small buds, and leafy sprigs that trail diagonally across the skin. The linework is thin and even, with darker shading in the centres of the flowers and the leaf veins. The ink is black and grey on pale skin against a plain, light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The king's son came to the garden gate on the third morning running, asking for a rose in the hard month when nothing grew. Old Teodora had kept the walled garden for forty years and knew better than to sell winter. She told him the price was one day's walk, carrying a cutting from her gate to the far spring, and that he must not stop to look back.

He laughed and agreed, because princes rarely believe that anything asked of them cannot be bought. He cut a stem with his own knife, wrapped it in wet linen and set off along the valley road. Wherever his boots touched the dust, the cutting put out a thin green sprig, and then another that trailed sideways like a vine searching for a wall. By noon there was a bud. By the second bend there were open roses, pale at the edges and dark at the heart where the petals folded in on themselves.

He did not look back, but he could hear the garden behind him: bees in the lavender, the drip of the cistern, and Teodora humming the river song her mother had taught her. At the spring the flowers were fully open, and leaves had climbed his arm to the elbow, each vein inked darker than the last. He knelt, dipped the stems, and the water rose to meet them.

When he came back the gate stood open and Teodora was gone, but the wall was thick with new roses. The prince understood then that the price had been paid in full, because the garden had walked out of the wall with him and was still growing along the road he had taken.
