Cartoon bat with big eyes on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon bat with large round eyes, pointed ears and spread wings sits centre frame, drawn with soft, layered grey shading. Thin highlights along the wing bones and the fur texture give the bat depth against the pale skin. The design is shown straight on, with the blue background visible at the edges of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bat had been hanging upside down from the rafters of Mother Hesketh's bakehouse for three weeks, and the baker had stopped asking him to leave. He was called Pemberton, though nobody in the village of Little Mordow could say who had given him the name. He had enormous round eyes that never quite agreed with each other, and when the bread came out of the ovens he would drop from the beams, flap twice, and land squarely on the flour sacks with a puff of white.

One morning in late October the miller's boy came running in with a sack over his shoulder and a face like curdled milk. The sack was moving. Pemberton put his head on one side, stared at the lump of cloth, and said, in a voice like a rusty gate, "Whatever that is, it is not bread."

The boy opened the sack. Out tumbled a grey cat named Dorcas, who had been stolen from the abbey by a gang of crows, who had in turn been told by a fox that the abbey cat was a witch. Dorcas looked at Pemberton, looked at the ovens, and sighed the sigh of a creature who has been through far too much before breakfast.

The three of them spent the whole day arguing about whose fault it was, and by dusk they had agreed on only one thing: the crows were an outrage. Pemberton flew them home that night with the cat clinging to his fur and the boy riding on the baker's broom, and when they returned at sunrise, everybody agreed the bat had been very brave, though Pemberton maintained he had mostly been terrified.
