Stretching black cat on a foot
Realism · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A realistic black cat stretches forward with its back arched and tail curled upwards, shown on the side of a foot. The fur is shaded in soft black and grey with fine detail on the whiskers and face. Small areas of blue eyes and brownish tones add colour against the otherwise dark ink, and the cat fills most of the frame against a plain skin background.

The cat was already sitting on the sealed crate when the lorry rolled into bay six, and nobody on the night shift could agree on who had let it in. The manifest said cabbages from Calais. Cabbages do not purr. I swung my torch along the seal and found it stretched flat across the lid, back arched, tail hooked up like a question mark, pretending it had never once considered leaving.

Gerrard from the dog unit wanted it scanned for a chip. Sunita wanted it off the premises before the inspector arrived. I said nothing, because the cat had turned its head and was watching me with eyes the colour of a gas ring, and I had the uncomfortable feeling it was checking my paperwork. When Gerrard raised his lamp, its ears went flat, and it reached one front paw under the seal, then the other, lengthening itself the way a cat does when a stile is in the way.
We found no chip. We found a pencilled line at the bottom of the manifest that nobody had typed: one passenger, black, does not travel well. Sunita laughed for the first time that shift. Gerrard called it a joke, though he kept glancing at the crate as if it might be filed under contraband.
By the time the inspector's van pulled in, the seal was broken and the bay was empty except for a dusting of grey fur on the tarmac. I signed the form as I always do. Passengers: one. Status: departed under own authority, tail first.
