Blue and purple dragon on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A blue dragon with spread purple-and-grey wings sits coiled on the upper back, with a pink-purple spined crest and a long tail curling down toward the lower back. The linework is dark and defined, with smooth blue shading on the body and gradient purple and grey shading in the wings. The colour is bold and well balanced, and the dragon is centred on the back with the shoulder blades framing it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bell in Harrowmere had not rung since the flood, and Ada Quill climbed the tower stairs at dusk to see why the ropes still hung there, slack and dry as old bread. At the top she found the dragon. It lay across the rafters with its wings folded like a fan of wet slate, its blue flanks gone dull with dust, and its crest, a ruff of plum-coloured spines, had gone grey at the tips. Its tail ran out through the louvres and down the outside wall, the way a river runs out of a city.

She had been told as a girl that Brannoch the dragon had drunk the river dry to put out the fire in the mill, and that it had lain down in the belfry to sleep off the thirst. Nobody believed the bit about sleeping. Everybody believed the bit about the bell, which the dragon had swallowed in its grief when the mill owner's son drowned in the sluice, and which it had never given back.

Ada sat on the beam beside it and talked about the price of eels and her brother's new boat until the stars came out through the louvres. Then she reached into her coat for the iron tongue she had stolen from the vicar's drawer, held it up to the dragon's great knuckled claw, and waited.

In the morning the whole valley heard the bell. It came out of the dragon's throat, low and cracked and wrong, but it was ringing, and the river, which had been waiting for its permission, began to run again.
