Cartoon character sleeve outline on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full sleeve of outline linework covers the upper arm and shoulder, filled with cartoon figures, a crown, a tower-like structure and loose scattered objects. The lines are fine and even, with a reddish tone in places that may be a stencil or early marking rather than finished shading. The skin is light and the background shows a tattoo studio interior, with the design shown in no colour beyond the line work.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hay was still damp from Tuesday's rain when Dad found the drawings on the feed shed wall, and by then Owen had covered the whole thing: the chapel on the far hill, a tower he swore was the grain silo, and a crown balanced on a fence post as if someone rich had left it there by mistake. Nobody had told him the wall was for lambing notes. Dad stood in the doorway with the milk pail in one hand and didn't say anything for so long that the ewes started shouting.

Owen drew in pencil and never went over it, so the whole place looked half remembered. The hooded boy with the round face was always down in the corner, standing on the gate with his arms out like he was about to be carried off by a gust. Owen claimed it was the lad who had walked up our lane in January with a torch and a dog that wouldn't come when called. I told him that was daft. He just asked me to pass the red chalk and went on shading the tower's door.

Dad didn't shout. He fetched a bucket of whitewash, looked at the crown for a long while, and then put the brush back on its hook. "That one's good," he said. "Leave the crown." Owen grinned at me like he'd won a bet nobody else knew was on.

Snow came in the night and buried the yard. In the morning the only marks on the white were Owen's boot prints, circling in the shape of a tower, with a little ring at the top where he'd stopped to be a king for a minute.
