Japanese waves and clouds on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is covered in stylised Japanese-style waves with curling white-outlined crests and a cloud shape at the top. The linework is bold, with grey shading and solid black areas creating depth within the waves. Two solid black bands wrap the lower forearm, framing the design against a plain studio background.

Rain had been falling on the harbour market since before the boats came in, and by noon the awnings sagged with it like wet sails. Nell Harrow kept her stall at the far end, where the gutter ran over the cobbles and the gulls gave up on the cabbages. She sold smoked eels, dried kelp and a little salt in twists of brown paper, and she had never once been asked where the sea went at night.

On the third Tuesday of October a stranger came up from the slipway carrying a bundle wrapped in oilcloth. He set it on her counter without a word. Inside was a folded cloud, grey as slate, and beneath it a wave that had curled itself into a tight white crest, the way water does just before it decides to break. Nell did not ask what it cost. She knew the price of things that came out of the sea.
Then the rain thickened and the market emptied all at once, and she was alone under the tarpaulin with the wave. It rose a little each time she turned her back, and each time it sat nearer the edge of the counter. She wrapped it three times in cloth and carried it down to the water herself, and the rain stopped the moment her boots touched the wet stone of the quay.
The next morning the stranger's bundle was gone, and in its place lay a single shell with a white lip, and the gulls were quiet for the first time that year.
