Cartoon donkey with bow and small heart

Black and grey · Flash

A soft pencil drawing of a chubby cartoon donkey standing side on, with a large head, round eyes, a smile and long floppy ears. Cross-hatched pencil shading gives the body and ears volume, and a bow is drawn on the tail. A small outlined heart sits above the head against a plain pale background.

Dear Mrs Okonedo,

Sorry about the bunting on the stairwell. I know you had to step over the tin, and I know you have been muttering about the lift since Tuesday. Maisie has decided that Gerald, the grey donkey she won at the summer fair, needs a bow on his tail for her party, and nobody on the fourteenth floor has been allowed to say no.

Gerald's tail will not stay put. We tied the ribbon on four times, and each time he sagged sideways like he'd been on a long shift, which to be fair he has. He's been propping open the door of flat 9 for the milkman since March. Maisie says he isn't tired, he's thinking, so she sat him on the windowsill to think properly, facing the car park, with a paper heart pinned above his ears.

The heart was her idea. She drew it on the back of a council letter and said Gerald was sending it to the lady who feeds the pigeons by the bins. I went down this morning to look, and it turned out to be you, in your dressing gown, scattering crusts with great seriousness.

So this is an invitation. Saturday, four o'clock, flat 14. Bring a bowl and wear whatever you like. Gerald will be wearing his bow, and as far as Maisie is concerned, that makes him the guest of honour and you the second.

Love, Dee, 14C

P.S. The heart is for you. She said so, and she has never once been wrong about hearts.
