Leaping rabbit line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A rabbit mid-leap is drawn in black outline, with its ears laid back and its front paws stretched forward. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, with slightly heavier strokes around the ears and head. The rabbit fills the cream background from top to bottom in a simple, open composition.

I'd been practising the one step my mother taught me in the scullery, all knees and no grace, and the trick was to go before my nerve did.

Frankie Dunn had been watching me from the balcony rail all evening. He worked the projector at the Regal next door and came over still in his overalls, smelling of nitrate and oranges. 'You're going to break your neck,' he said. 'Probably,' I said, and held out my hand anyway.
We went round the floor twice before anyone noticed we were not so much dancing as trying to outrun each other. He kept his head low and his ears flat, the way you do when you expect to be told off, and I kept waiting for him to plant his feet. Instead he lifted off the boards at the turn, a long clean leap that cleared the couple from Bexhill, and came down with his arms out as if he had always known he could.
Stan stopped the band. Everyone clapped, and I laughed so hard I had to sit on the stairs. When I looked up Frankie had gone, and so had the chair by the door. In the dust on the cloakroom windowsill someone had drawn a rabbit in one unbroken line, its back legs still in the air.
