He has kept one pair of white cotton gloves since before the war, the fingertips gone the colour of weak tea. He will not let anyone else wash them. Last night, with the lamps already dimmed and only nine people left on the benches, he pulled them on, slow as a church service, and lifted the old conjuring hat for the final trick. Then one of the painted stars dropped from the canvas above the stage and landed in the sawdust at his feet, and I swear the whole tent breathed in.

The bank in Shrewsbury wants the wagons by Friday, and the horses go to a farm near Church Stretton. Mr Vesey has promised to make the last of our money multiply over supper, which I have told him I will believe when I see it. He says the gloves are for working, not for waving at people. I think he is wrong, but I did not argue.

Come to the station on Saturday if you can. Bring a clean shirt for him, and a bag of barley sugar. He will pretend not to want either.
