Decorative lettering with moon and star doodles
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of large, flowing decorative lettering, with an oversized looping first letter and smaller letters running across to the right. Doodled elements fill the spaces around the letters, including clouds, a crescent moon, a small smiling star and hanging droplets. The linework is bold and even, with hatched shading inside some shapes and no colour fill.

Ivor Pell had lettered shopfronts in Scarrow Bay for forty-one years, and he had never once been asked for a loop as tall as a man. The commission came from Mrs Abernethy, who ran the bakery on Quay Lane and wanted her name curling over the window like a wave about to break. He chalked the big S first, then sat on his stool with his tea going cold and squinted at it through the drizzle.

His apprentice, Nell, was seventeen and believed that lettering needed decoration or it would be lonely. While he was inside mixing gold size, she crept out with a fine brush and filled the spaces with clouds, a crescent moon hanging from a thread, and a small star with a face. Ivor found the moon when he came back out. He said nothing about it, because the light was going and the paint was still wet.
That night a squall came up off the water. Ivor lay awake listening to it rattle the shutters and pictured the glass running. In the morning the rain had left small bright droplets clinging to the lower curve of the S, and they hung exactly where Nell had painted her own, as if the sky had looked over her work and signed it off.
Mrs Abernethy wanted the doodles painted out. Ivor told her the bakery would be bright enough without them. She went quiet, then said the customers would have to look up to read the name anyway. They did. By seven the queue reached the bins, and every child in it was pointing at the little star.
