Cartoon ninja turtle with red bandana
Other · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon ninja turtle in a muscular pose fills the frame, with a weapon handle rising past its shoulder at the top right. The figure is rendered in smooth grey shading with highlights and dark outlines, and the red bandana and its trailing tail are the only strong colour. The tattoo covers a limb, and the background is plain skin with soft grey wash shapes behind the figure.

Dilys had counted the windfalls three times before the dew came down, and each time the number came out one short of what the crows had promised. By the Bramley row the grass was flattened into a curved track, and a set of prints too broad for any badger ran off towards the perry pears. She crouched beside a split fruit and found it bitten in a neat half-moon, the way a man bites a sandwich he means to finish.

Old Tom Pryce from the next holding had sworn the orchard wall was haunted by something green and armoured. Dilys had laughed at him over cider at the Feathers. Now she sat on an upturned crate in the dark with her torch off and a flask going cold, watching the wall. Nothing came. A wasp walked across her knuckle, unbothered, and she let it.
Just after the church clock struck eleven, something dropped from the top of the wall with a sound like a sack of flour landing on a flagstone. It rose in a crouch, broad as a barn door, a red band tied across its eyes and two tails of cloth snapping behind it. A long handle jutted over one shoulder. It looked at the fallen apples, then at her, and let out a sigh through its nose as if she were the one who had ruined the evening.
"Mind the Bramleys," she said. The figure gathered the fruit one by one into a sack, set it down beside her crate, and climbed back over the wall, and she heard it tell the crows off in a voice like gravel. Dilys wrote none of it down. In the morning there was a sack of Bramleys waiting on her crate, and she left the gate open the next night too.
