Cartoon octopus on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A red cartoon octopus with large white eyes and blue pupils sticks its pink tongue out of an open mouth, with its orange tentacles spreading across the lower part of the design. The outlines are bold and the shading is soft, with light highlights on the head and sucker details on the tentacles. Teal shading sits behind the tentacles against plain pinkish skin, and the design is centred on the leg.

Pull your hood up, the rain's only warming to its work, and let me tell you about Otto, the octopus who lived under the fish market and could not keep his eyes to himself. He had two great white eyes, round as dinner plates, with blue pupils that wandered after anything shiny, and eight orange arms that hung about the drains like wet washing. Most mornings he did nothing worse than frighten the gulls.

One wet Thursday he slid up the gutter with a bottle top stuck to his longest arm and offered it to Mrs Pell, who sold cod and whelks from the stall nearest the drain. She told him she did not trade with things that looked like a dropped jelly. Otto considered this, then stuck out his tongue, pink as a tram ticket, and Mrs Pell laughed so hard she dropped a crab into the gutter.
The crab was called Reginald and had opinions about everything, most of them rude. He scuttled off with the brass bell from the pier, and Otto went after him with all eight arms flailing, bumping crates, scattering ice, shouting something that sounded like a foghorn with a cold. By the time the rain eased, the bell hung from his head like a hat and the whole market was clapping.
Mrs Pell kept the bottle top on a string above her scales. Every wet Thursday since, a pink tongue appears at the edge of her tray when she is not looking, and she leaves a herring on the slab for the octopus who never learned to behave. Now, whose turn is it for the teapot?
