Neo-traditional seahorse with sparkles

Neo-trad · Colour · Photo

A cartoon seahorse with a large pink-rimmed eye, dotted peach detailing along its body and a curled tail fills the centre of the image. Bold black outlines, smooth colour fills and small highlight dots give it a flat, graphic finish, while pink sparkles and a pink heart sit around it. A partial red rose and a banner edge appear at the left, and a leaf shape is visible at the lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By three in the morning the ward goes quiet in a way the day staff never hear, all the machines breathing at their own pace. I push the linen trolley past bay four and Nurse Adeyemi waves me over with her pen between her teeth, because Mrs Kowalczyk in bed nine has asked for the seahorse again.

It is a plastic thing, really, a bath toy someone's grandson left behind in March, mint green with a pink rim painted round its big glossy eye. Mrs Kowalczyk calls it Dennis. She holds it up to the bedside lamp so the little pink stars stuck along its back catch the light. 'He keeps watch,' she says, and I tell her Dennis is the best night nurse on the floor, which is almost true.

Nobody pays attention to the small things at this hour, so I notice everything. The heart-shaped sticker someone pressed onto the cabinet. The way the fluorescent tube hums in B flat. The paper cup of tea I forgot and found cold again at half past four. Mrs Kowalczyk sleeps with Dennis tucked under her chin, tail curled like a question mark, and I check her line, her drip, her breathing, and then I check it all again, because that is what the night is for.

At six the sky over the car park goes the colour of weak tea and the day shift floods in with their coats and their gossip. Handover takes eleven minutes. I give them the numbers, the bloods, the bay that needs watching. Then I walk out past the sliding doors and stop in the cold, and I find I am still thinking about that glossy painted eye, watching the corridor for me.
