Chameleon with flowers on a branch
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A blue chameleon with a decorated body of pink and yellow flowers sits on a brown branch, with its head turned to the right. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat colour fills and small yellow dots and red and yellow scalloped bands along the body and legs. The design fills the frame against a plain skin background.

Dear Tomas,

The chameleon has taken over the drying branch again, and I've given up trying to shift it. It arrived in the spring, though I can't tell you where from, and it has been painting itself ever since. Mrs Ferriter swears it copied the pink hollyhocks from her window boxes, and I'll admit the flower on its shoulder looks freshly done, with its little yellow dots like pollen on the petals.
On Saturday I tried to catch it for you. I thought a jar on the windowsill of your cabin might keep you company on the long watches, and I knew you'd want something from home that didn't need feeding. I crept along the wall with Dad's old landing net, and it watched me come the whole way, turning from blue to a sort of bruised green to match the weed on the steps. When I finally lifted the net it simply climbed out over the rim and settled back on the branch, head turned towards the sea, as if it had been waiting for the tide to go out.
It has stayed there since. The boats go out at five and the gulls argue over the bait, and the chameleon doesn't so much as blink. Mum says it's only sunning itself, but I've started to think it's keeping watch for the same boat you're on. Don't tell her I said that. Keep your hat on in the wind, and write when you can.
Love, Nell
