Every Saturday the old balloon man stood at the edge of the dance hall floor with his bunch of strings, and every Saturday the mill girls laughed at the red nose he would not take off. Then the hall burned down one winter, and the town put up a new one on the cliff road, too far for him to walk after dark. Old Harold Pell tied his three best balloons to the handle of his front door, yellow for the baker, blue for the ferryman, and red for the girl who had never once paid him, and went to bed meaning only to rest his legs.

Morning came with the gulls in the chimney and the door swinging open over the harbour. Harold was still gripping the rail in his nightshirt, rising above the crooked rooftops, and below him the lights of the new hall were coming on for the first waltz of the season. He could hear the fiddles clearly. He could not reach the handle.

They say he came down when the tide turned, right on the hall steps, and asked the girl with the red balloon for the first dance. She had been waiting thirty years to be asked, and she said yes before he had finished his sentence.
