Cartoon old man holding a balloon on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon elderly man in glasses and a jacket floats upwards, gripping a single balloon drawn with soft shading. The character is rendered in fine, detailed linework with smooth grey shading that gives the figure volume. Partial designs appear at the lower edge and along the left side of the leg, with no colour ink used.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hendry had the last of the string in his teeth when the wind came round the back of Castle Hill and tried to take his hat. He had forty-two balloons tied to the kitchen chair, and the chair was not as steady as he had promised Mrs Pardoe it would be. Her goat was still on the low wall, watching him with the disapproval goats reserve for other people's plans.

He had bought the balloons from a travelling man in Thorne who sold them in bundles of twelve: red, yellow, and one that said Congratulations in silver letters, which he had not wanted but had not been able to refuse. Hendry was seventy-one. His knees were the reason he had never climbed the hill, and his wife's last complaint before she moved to her sister's in Harrogate had been that he would die of wanting to see over the trees. So he had decided to see over the trees.

The first lift was dignified. The chair rose a yard, then two, and the village became a pattern of slate roofs and washing lines. Then the goat stood up, the wind changed, and the chair turned slowly until he was looking straight down at Mrs Pardoe, who was waving a tea towel as if he were a ship leaving harbour.

He came down eventually in the beech wood, which was soft and forgiving, and sat on a fallen trunk with one balloon left. He untied it and watched it drift over the treetops, small and bright, and thought the view had been worth the wet boots he would now have to dry by the range.
