Muppet-style chef with cleaver and vegetables on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon chef character wearing a tall chef's hat and bow tie holds a cleaver beside a pile of cauliflower, apples, tomatoes and potatoes. Soft, blended shading gives the figure a painterly, realistic finish, with smooth tonal transitions across the face and clothing. Bright reds, greens and yellows dominate the produce, set against a pale blue background behind the figure.

You have the cleaver before you have the recipe, which is how Mrs Okonedo on the eleventh floor always said trouble started. The lift is out again, so you climb with a carrier bag of cauliflower, two bruised apples, a tomato that has given up, and a King Edward the size of a fist. On the landing someone has propped the fire door open with a boot. Behind you the stairwell smells of frying onions and wet pigeon.

Gerald, the chef who lives in the flat above yours, is the only man in Harrow Court who owns a tall white hat. He answers on the sixth knock, in a bow tie the red of a pillar box, holding a cleaver up like a trophy. "Vegetables," he says, with the gravity of a surgeon. "Never trust a cauliflower that hasn't been introduced to a knife." He takes the bag, sorts the produce into rows along the windowsill, and peels the apple in one long curl without looking at it.
The plan is a soup for the residents' meeting, where the council wants to discuss the lift, the damp and the fence. Gerald hums while he chops. You stand in his doorway and watch the sky over the car park go pale behind the glass, and you realise he has been feeding the whole block for six years through the hatch of his kitchen, one shared bowl at a time.
At the meeting nobody asks about the lift. They ask for seconds. The cauliflower goes first, then the apple cake, and the council man eats his bowl with his hat off. Gerald sets the cleaver down on the trestle table beside the ladle, pleased and quiet, and you think it is the most dangerous thing you have ever seen a man do with a knife that was only ever meant for vegetables.
