Blue watercolour owl on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A stylised owl sits on the skin, with its body drawn in loose black linework and filled with soft blue wash. One large round eye has a red-brown iris and the other is a pale, shaded eye. The blue wash bleeds beyond the outlines and fades out at the edges, against a dark background.

The woad had run again. Hester watched the blue creep past the black lines of the owl's wing and out across the paper, and she thought of the dye vat behind her mother's house, where everything came out bluer than it went in. Her father used to say a good owl was one that couldn't quite hold its shape, that it belonged half to the dark and only borrowed the daylight.

She had been painting owls since spring, for the carter who wanted one nailed above his door and the miller's widow who wanted one on the lid of a box. Nobody in Ashby Wood ever asked why the birds she drew had one eye pale as skimmed milk. They only wanted to know whether the owl would keep the mice out of the barn.

On the last night of October she carried the sheet to the forest edge, where the great oak leaned over the lane. The owl in its crown turned its head when she called, and its good eye caught her lantern, round and red as a coal. She held the painting up. The owl studied it for a long time, then studied her, and let out one note like a gate swinging on a rusted hinge.

By morning the sheet was gone from her hands, and the blue had spread across the cobbles of the lane like spilled rain. Where the dew touched it, it stayed. Her mother still says the bluebells came up that spring in the shape of wings, and that the owl never once asked Hester to paint it again.
