Cartoon owl with diamonds on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon owl with a purple body, layered green and teal feathers and large pink-rimmed eyes sits centre frame, with orange talons gripping a pale curling shape below. Blue faceted diamonds and orange flame-like shapes surround it. Bold black outlines define the forms, with soft shading on the feathers and eyes, and the bright, saturated colours dominate the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday, 2.40 a.m., Harrow Gate crossing. Mrs Okonkwo's lorry rolled up with its headlamps off again, and the only reason I didn't wave it straight through was Pim. He lives in the rafters of the hut and hunts the mice, and he was sitting on the barrier post with those enormous lilac eyes fixed on the cab like the driver had insulted his mother. Pim has never once been wrong about a load. I have stopped arguing with him about it.

I made her open the back. Forty crates of fire lanterns, orange paper, the sort you float at weddings, and a single tin of marmalade with a label so cheerful it looked fake. Pim landed on the tin before I could touch it and started bobbing his head, which in his language means something is wrong with the seal. Under the lid was a bed of cut stones, blue and faceted, each one catching my torch like a small cold window. Mrs Okonkwo swore the marmalade was for her sister in Leeds. I told her the sister could have the marmalade back once it had been to the lab.

By four the lorry was impounded and the stones were in a numbered bag, and I was writing up the report with Pim watching me from the lamp bracket. He dropped a feather onto my clipboard. It was teal at the tip and green at the root, the colours of the sea before a storm. I have logged it as Exhibit C, one feather, undisputed. It is the only thing that crossed the border tonight without lying about where it came from.
