Pink cartoon owl on a branch
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon owl with large blue-green eyes, tufted ears and a magenta feathered body sits on a branch with an orange belly patch. The outlines are bold and dark, with shaded scale-like feather texture and a small pink leaf at the top of the branch. Vivid pink, orange and green ink dominate against the skin tone, and the design fills most of the frame.

The ovens have been on since three, and flour has crept into the seams of your apron again. Across the yard the delivery van idles with its lights on, and Mrs Okonedo from the flower shop next door has left a cup of tea on the step without knocking, as she always does. You have forty tin loaves to score before the first queue forms on Hollis Road, and an owl has been sitting on the back gate since midnight, staring through the bakehouse window with the look of someone who has heard the bread is free.

It is pink, of course. Nobody in Thornbury keeps a pink owl, but this one has feathers the colour of rhubarb jam and eyes like two wet blue marbles, and it watches your hands on the dough as if it has opinions about your shaping. You tap the glass. It does not blink. You fold the heel of yesterday's sourdough into a sheet of greaseproof and slide it out onto the step beside the tea. The owl drops from the gate, tugs the parcel open with one orange-bellied lunge, and settles on the branch of the old pear tree that leans over the fence, where a single pink leaf has somehow come out in October.
By the time the shutter goes up at six, the owl has gone and the branch is bare except for that leaf. Mrs Okonedo comes in for her day-old buns, looks at the empty step, and says nothing about the tea. You say nothing about the bread either. You load the rack and flip the sign to open, and find on the windowsill a pale feather, rose-coloured at the tip, tucked under the flour scoop as neatly as a receipt. Some debts in this trade are paid in cooling loaves and early mornings, and you have a feeling you will be owing this one for a while.
