Stitched owl with button eyes on a foot

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A stitched, plush-style owl with orange feathers on its head, large button eyes in pink and green, and a pink belly marked with stitches. It perches on a black-outlined needle and thread, with a small orange beak and feet. Bold outlines, soft shading and bright colour fill the design, which sits on the top of a foot against a plain skin background.

The owl arrived in the post wrapped in brown paper, one button eye hanging by a thread, and you knew before you unwrapped it that old Mrs Pell had sent it from Scarrow. Nobody else on the island still stitched their owls. The gulls had taken the fishermen's caps and the wind had taken the washing lines, but she had always kept a tin of spare buttons, and she had kept one owl all her life.

You set the bird on the workbench under the lamp and looked at its belly, where the pink wool had split along three seams. The stitches were tight and blue-black, pulled by someone who did not trust the cloth. Beside the bench lay the needle you had found pushed into the sill of her cottage the week she died, its thread hanging in a loose curl like a question. You had never threaded it. You threaded it now. The eye took three tries, and the owl seemed to lean forward to watch.

By dusk the orange feathers were bright again and the green eye sat firm. You worked on until the ferry lamp came on across the bay, and when you finally bit the thread you heard, or believed you heard, a small dry click, like a button settling into its socket.

In the morning the owl was gone from the bench. On the sill, where the needle had been, lay a single pink feather and a note in cramped capitals: THE OTHER ONE IS YOURS NOW.
