Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A cartoon owl stands front-facing with wide ears, large pale blue eyes with dark pupils, and magenta-framed glasses across the face. The body is shaded brown with scalloped feather rows, a cream chest, a small orange beak and orange feet. Bold black outlines and flat colour fills sit against a plain light grey background with a soft shadow beneath.

Hettie Marrow had never once been seen without her spectacles, which is why the whole wood assumed the magenta frames were a fashion rather than a prescription. She wore them to the Michaelmas count, to the badger's funeral, and to every night she spent perched on the lich gate reading the parish notices aloud to nobody. The notices were put up by Mr Crouch the fox, who was forever trying to sell something.

This spring he nailed a new one to the oak at the crossroads. It promised every creature who signed the blue ledger a hollow beneath the churchyard yew, rent free for a hundred years, provided they could say their own name backwards by moonrise. Hettie read it three times, pushed her glasses up with one wing, and read it a fourth time, because the small print under the seal said the yew already belonged to the owls, and had done since before the parish was drawn.

She went down to the crossroads with a hazel twig and a pot of ink made from wet ash. Mr Crouch was waiting with his tail brushed and his best smile. He held out the pen. Hettie took it, wrote her name across the ledger in tidy capitals, then turned the page round so he could read it aloud. He stammered through it, tripped on the double letter, and the whole wood went quiet, waiting for the vowels to fall over.

Hettie folded the ledger under her wing, tapped the glasses back into place, and watched the fox slink off towards the stream. Above her the moon sat fat and clear through the magenta, sharper than it had ever looked, and she hooted once, softly, the way you do when a sum finally comes out right.
