Tribal-style hummingbird design

Black and grey · Flash

A solid black silhouette of a hummingbird in flight, facing left with a long thin beak. The wings are drawn as tapering, flame-like strokes with a curled swirl marking the head and chest. The design is shown on a plain white background with no shading, and the tail feathers extend downward in long, separated strokes.

The keeper's daughter, Morwen, had been told the lamp must never go out, so when the wind came off the Skerry in February and the wick began to sputter, she climbed the iron stairs with a tin of oil and cold hands. Halfway up she heard a whirring, quick as a struck match, and something hung in the lantern glass before her face: a bird no longer than her thumb, its throat catching the light.

It had a beak as long as a darning needle and wings that burned at the tips like the strokes of a flame. It did not fly off. It hovered against the glass, beating itself against the cold, and she understood that the thing was trying to reach the fire.

She poured the oil slowly and trimmed the wick. Each time the flame steadied, the bird settled on the brass rail and folded its wings, and its long tail feathers streamed down over the iron like ink poured from a pen. When the beam swung out across the water, a fishing boat coming home in the dark turned its bow towards the light and found the harbour mouth.

Her father came up at dawn and found the bird asleep on the rail. He said nothing about it. He only said the lamp had not gone out in forty years and the sea had been quiet. Morwen said the bird had kept watch. Her father said birds knew nothing of watches, and they both looked at the small black shape until it lifted and went out over the grey water, heading south towards islands no one on the Skerry had ever seen.
