Cartoon peacock with blue-eyed feathers

Mixed · Flash

A cartoon peacock faces left with a large round head, big blue eyes and a small crest of dots on top. The body is shaded with fine crosshatched and stippled lines, and the tail fans down into rows of feather shapes, each containing a blue eye. The background is plain white and the image is a drawing rather than a photograph of skin.

By the third week of January the snow has buried the lower gate of Hollin Farm, and you are the only thing in the yard anyone can see from the lane. The hens have gone quiet in their shed, the ewes stand with their backs to the wind, and the farmhand's boots squeak past the barn without once looking up. You, however, carry forty-one eyes on your tail, and you have never once been allowed to keep them shut.

Nell, who is seven and thinks you are vain, finds you perched on the wall by the milking parlour and informs you that peacocks are only pretty in summer. You puff up to argue, which is what you always do, and the feathers rattle like a dropped tray of spoons. She laughs, then goes still, because out past the orchard a small bleat has started, thin as a wire, and it is not going to stop.

The lamb is one of the late twins, and she has wandered into the drift where the field dips toward the beck. You cannot fly far in this weather, so you do the only thing a peacock is any good at. You walk to the top of the field, lift your tail, and turn slowly until every blue eye faces the drift. Nell's father is shouting from the far gate, and the wind pulls his voice to pieces, but the lamb has lifted her head toward the one bright thing in all that white.

She comes up the slope one wobbling step at a time, following your eyes like a lantern. At the gate Nell has her arms open, and you let your tail fall, pleased and frozen, while the lamb noses into the straw as if she had always meant to come home by the blue road.
