Tribal leopard standing on hind legs
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A leopard stands upright on its hind legs with both front paws raised, its head turned to the left. The body and tail are filled with bold solid black tribal swirls and spots against a plain white background. The design is a single black silhouette with no colour, and the tail curls up to the right to balance the composition.

The bow of the Marigold Quay had looked wrong since the day Tomasz Wren hung her last plank. The leopard he'd carved for the figurehead stood up on its hind legs with both forepaws lifted, as if to swat the gulls off the wheelhouse, and the harbourmaster said it was a daft thing to put on a working boat.

Tomasz only shrugged. He had watched his father's boat go down off Flamborough with the crew still aboard, and he had decided that whatever sat on the prow should at least look ready to fight. He worked the spots in black tar and swirled the shoulders into knots like wrack on the tideline. The tail he gave a hard curl upward, the way a cat hooks its tail around a fence rail to keep its balance.
The autumn gale came in off the North Sea on a Tuesday. Pete Lazenby, seventeen and new to the crew, stood at the wheel with his knuckles white while the bow dropped into green water and clawed its way back up. Every time it rose, he swore the carved animal had shifted its weight to meet the next wave. By dawn they were in the lee of the breakwater with the nets still aboard and nobody lost.
Tomasz came down to the quay with his flask and found the boy scraping salt from the figurehead. "It's only paint and wood," Pete said. Tomasz looked at the curled tail, the one part he had never managed to make sit flat, and said nothing about it at all.
