A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper's boy had rowed out to the rock every Thursday for a year with the paraffin, and every Thursday the sea horse was waiting at the foot of the landing steps, hanging in the green water with its tail wound round a barnacled ring. It had a horse's long face and a horse's ears, and its mane was the colour of weed in a jar. Nobody on the mainland believed the boy when he told them. His mother said the cold had got into his head.

Then the lamp failed in March, the one that turned the rocks off the Ellen Crane's wreck, and the keeper went up the iron stairs with a spanner and did not come down. The boy sat on the wet step with the bucket between his knees and cried into his sleeve. When he looked up the sea horse had come to the surface, four bubbles rising from its snout like coins, and it was watching him with one large green eye.

"Your father mended things for me once," it said, in a voice like a wet door. "I can mend this one, but the price is the paraffin you carry out every Thursday. You must leave it at the rock and never come back for the bucket."

He agreed, because he was nine and the light was going dark over the men on the Ellen Crane. The sea horse dived, and the lamp came on before the tide turned. The boy kept his promise and left the paraffin, and in the morning the bucket was gone, and the water beside the steps was clear all the way down to the sand.
