Astronaut riding a dinosaur on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows an astronaut in a white spacesuit and helmet riding a purple, teal and red dinosaur with a spiked back and clawed feet. The dinosaur's open jaws reach towards the lower edge of the design, and the astronaut raises one arm. The linework is bold and dark, with flat fills of bright colour and simple shading on the creature's body.

Nobody on the Harrow Lane fairground believed Ruth when she said the lizard had asked for a lift. They had heard her say plenty that summer, mostly about the price of candyfloss and the man who ran the dodgems, so they put it down to sunstroke and went on selling tickets.

The astronaut turned up the following Tuesday, though. He did not come from the sky, as Ruth had hoped, but out of the back of a horse trailer parked behind the waltzer. His white suit was scorched brown at the knees and his fishbowl helmet had a crack running down one side. He carried a clipboard covered in sums and asked, very politely, where the nearest reptile was that hadn't been fed on chips.

The lizard was called Pauline. She was purple as a bruise, with a row of teal spikes down her back like the teeth of a comb, and she had been living on the hard shoulder of the motorway since April, chewing the ends off lorry tyres. The astronaut had come to fetch her home. Ruth, who had grown fond of the beast and had been feeding her warm doughnuts through the lorry-park fence, said she would show him the way.

Pauline took the slip road like she had been waiting her whole life for it. Ruth held on to the spikes with both hands, the astronaut sat high on the saddle with one arm flung up to the stars, and the last anyone on Harrow Lane saw of them was a flash of teal and violet over the cattle grid. Ruth came back alone the next morning, sticky with sugar, and swore the lizard had waved.
