Cartoon villain and creatures on the ribs

Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo

Three views of the same tattoo on the side of the torso show a cartoon-style villain with dark blue hair, yellow eyes and a toothy grin. Below it sit a pink creature with an open mouth and a green tentacled creature, all outlined with bold dark linework and filled with saturated colour. The soft blue and green wash in the background adds depth, and the panels show the design from different angles along the ribs.

Dear Win, you will not believe what came up the back stairs at Gull Cottage on Tuesday. The new lodger in number four signed the book as Mr Morrow, paid a month in advance in silver shillings that were still warm from somebody's pocket, and asked for a room with a view of the harbour wall. He had hair the blue of a bruised plum and eyes like two egg yolks, and he grinned with far too many teeth for a man who claims to sell insurance. Mother would have shut the door on him. I gave him the room.

Everything in the house has begun to smell faintly of brine. The pink creature, which he calls Bartholomew, lives in the bath and sulks whenever the hot tap runs cold. The green one with the tentacles, Minnie, slides under the kitchen door after dark to steal the crab paste. Mr Morrow says they are his only family and I believe him, because the milk never goes sour anymore and the mice have all moved out to the bakery.

Last night the gulls went quiet and the tide came right up the lane. Mr Morrow stood on the front step in his good coat, dripping, and asked whether I had kept his tab. I said I had, in chalk, under the mat. He laughed until the windows rattled, then tipped me a pearl the size of a thimble. He went down the shingle with his creatures trailing after him, and the last thing I saw was Bartholomew waving a fin over his shoulder.

The pearl is on the mantel now. It hums whenever the kettle boils, and the cat will not sit in that corner. Do not tell Mother. Your loving sister, Edie.
