Snarling werewolf with clawed hand on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A snarling werewolf with a glowing orange eye, bared fangs and a large clawed hand raised towards the viewer, set against a purple and blue smoky background. The fur is rendered with soft, layered strokes and strong highlights, while the claws and teeth have sharp contrast and smooth blending. The image is a diptych of two close photos of the same piece on a leg, with vivid purple, blue and gold tones.

Dear Tom, the gasworks men say the thing has been back on the Ropewalk since the fog came in, and I have stopped pretending I don't believe them. Last Tuesday I walked my usual route past the tannery wall with the torch, and the dog would not go past the arch. Then the smoke came off the canal in purple ribbons, thick as dye, and a shape stood up on the coping with one long hand held out flat, as if asking me to wait for a tram.

Its eye was the colour of a coal that refuses to go out. It did not come down. It only looked at me, then at the lamp in my fist, and I understood it was counting the flame. I have never been so sure of anything as I was that it knew my name. The claws were longer than my fingers and gold at the tips where the streetlight caught them, and the fur along its forearm moved though there was no wind on the water.

It opened its jaws and I braced for the noise, but what came out was a cough, a wet old sound like a man clearing his chest after a long shift. Then it turned and went back into the smoke, and the lamp on the arch, which I had been meaning to fix since spring, flickered on by itself.

I have lit that lamp every night since, and I leave a pint of milk on the coping for the thing, which is probably madness. Come home at Easter. Mam asks after you, and so does the canal.
