The cat arrived on the top tier of the wedding cake just as the best man was reading out the seating plan. Nobody had invited it. Aunt Phyllis swore it had slipped in through the marquee flap with the florist, and Dad insisted it was the same blue-grey tom that had sat on the bonnet of his car outside the Crown in 1987, though that one had never grinned at anybody in his life. I was supposed to be minding the rings. Tomasz had handed me his in a velvet box and told me not to let it out of my sight, and I had done a fine job of that until the cat looked at me across the trestle tables and I felt the box go light in my pocket. When I checked, it was empty. The cat's whiskers twitched. I followed it past the bins and out into the car park, where it sat under the copper beech, and there, hanging from the lowest branch like a pair of small moons, were both rings.

By the time I got back with them, the cake was whole again and Tomasz was standing by the speeches with his hand out, asking me very politely where they had gone. The grin hung in the air over the marquee for a second longer than it should have, then dissolved like the last of the candle smoke. I told him the truth. He didn't believe me, but he kissed me anyway, which I suppose is what a grin is for.
