Black and grey castle tattoo with a ribbon banner reading a dream is a wish your heart makes, placed on a calf.

Castle and quote banner on a calf

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed castle with towers, spires and a clock tower is shown in the centre, with two ribbon banners across it carrying the words a dream is a wish your heart makes. Soft greyscale shading gives the stonework depth, and small star sparkles and wispy clouds surround the design. The tattoo fills a vertical space on the leg and is shown in a close, straight-on photograph.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

When the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Wonder ran out of money in a wet March, they kept three things: the striped tent with its patched side, a grey pony called Pelter, and the painted castle that had hung behind the trapeze since before anyone could remember. The ringmaster wanted to sell the castle for its canvas. Mags Tully, who mended the tent, said a show with no castle was just a field with rain on it.

The clock in the middle of that castle had stopped at ten to four. Mags's father had painted it the summer before he died, and nobody had touched it since. Each night after the last ring was swept, she climbed the rigging with a tin of gold paint and touched up one spire. She never fixed the clock. She told it the time out loud instead, because her father said a thing that is spoken to keeps better company than a thing left alone.

In the end they hung the castle one last time in a ploughed field outside Carrow, and the village walked out to see it, because villages will walk three miles for a sight they have never paid for. A girl of about seven stood under the painted arch with her hand flat on the canvas. She asked why the clock had stopped. Mags said it was waiting for someone to tell it the right hour. The girl thought about this for a long while, then said, 'It's ten to four,' and reached up with a fingertip of wet paint and moved the little black hand on to a quarter past.
