Fairytale castle on inner forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a fairytale castle with multiple spires and a central arched doorway runs down the inner forearm towards the wrist. Above the castle, soft grey shaded bursts and a rounded double shape sit beside it, with smooth blended shading rather than hard linework. The design is set in black and grey on a light skin tone, with the arm angled across the frame and the hand open at the bottom.

At ten past two the ward was quiet enough to hear the drip counter ticking over bed six, and Nadia Okafor was counting tablets in the drawer when the first firework went up past the multi-storey car park. She went to the window with the trolley still open behind her. A burst of gold hung above the lamps and fell, and then a second, pale and round, the shape a child draws for a balloon.

Bed six belonged to Tomasz, nine years old, brought in with a broken wrist from the trampoline park. He had not slept since the fireworks started, and he was sure they were in the wrong place. 'That's not the castle,' he said when she checked his cannula. 'The castle has the big ones at the end, over the bridge. Mum said so.' Nadia asked him to describe it. He did, with his good hand, drawing spires in the air above the blanket: seven of them, one with a flag, and a door shaped like an arch you could ride a horse through.
She had never been. Her sister had been twice and came home with a plastic crown and a sunburnt nose. Nadia told Tomasz the castle was probably just beyond the hill, and he did not believe her, which she respected. She sat on the edge of the chair until the sky went quiet and his breathing slowed.
At five, at handover, she found a sheet of paper on his tray table, drawn in biro. There was a black castle with a row of spires and an arched door, and above it two round shapes like ears, with grey bursts beside them. Underneath, in careful capitals, he had written FOR THE NIGHT NURSE WHO SAW IT TOO. She folded it into her pocket and went to find her coat.
