Gothic castle sketch on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a large gothic castle with tall pointed spires, arched doorways and a wide staircase, set in a small landscape with trees, rooftops, a city wall and an arched gateway. The work uses fine, sketchy linework with stippled dotwork for shadow and texture, and faint guide lines are still visible around the edges. It is rendered entirely in black ink and grey tones, and the oval composition sits centrally on the leg.

The survey drawings had been waiting in the tin trunk for eleven years, and Margit only opened it because the roof of the chapter house had started to sag over the cloister. Inside, under a sheet of greased paper, was the sketch her grandfather made the summer before the dam went in: the castle at the top of the hill, drawn from the lower road with a hard pencil and a steady hand. He had put guide lines everywhere, faint arcs and crosses that showed where each spire would fall, and he had never rubbed them out.

I worked from it for a month, she wrote in the margin of her own copy. The gateway was the hardest. He had drawn the arch twice, once with the keystone set low and once set high, and had written beside the second version that the stone was wrong and the mason would know it. The mason, Kessler, had been dead for thirty years. Margit found his name in the parish book, along with the price of a load of lime and a note that the wall above the gate had been rebuilt after a storm in 1921.
She measured the staircase twice. Thirty-one steps, each one worn into a shallow dish at the centre, where three generations of feet had gone up to the door and most of them had come down again. The last entry in the notebook was a single line in her grandfather's hand, pressed so hard it had torn the paper: the village is still there, the castle is not, draw the village. She had not understood it until she walked the lower road in the wet spring light and saw the rooftops, the stippled shadow under the trees, and the small arched gate that still opened onto the town.
