Castle under a crescent moon on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo covers the upper arm and reaches up towards the shoulder, showing a castle with pointed turrets and lit windows set against a deep blue night sky. A pale crescent moon with a shaded dark side sits at the top, surrounded by scattered stars and soft clouds. The shading is smooth and detailed, with warm yellow window light contrasting with cool teal and blue tones across the stonework and hillside below.

The bells in the lower town had been wrong for three nights, and Mam Greave said it was the castle's doing. Up on the ridge, where the old stone turrets caught the last of the sun, a hundred windows had lit themselves before dark, and nobody in Harrowgate had ever seen a window light itself.

Ellis Dunmore kept the lamps along Water Lane and had no patience for grandmothers. He climbed the steep track with a tinderbox and a brass hook, meaning to see the wicks for himself. The path was lined with nettles that bent away from his boots. At the gate a woman stood with a crescent moon of silver pinned to her shawl, and she asked him only whether he had come to light the castle or to be lit by it.
He said he had come to light the lamps, which was true, and she laughed and let him through. Inside, the great hall was full of people he half knew: the baker, the widow from the mill, and his own father, who had drowned in the weir the winter Ellis was nine. They sat at long tables under a ceiling painted deep blue and thick with stars, and every window glowed gold.
When he came back down at dawn his tinderbox was empty and the bells rang true. Mam Greave asked him what he had seen. He told her the castle kept its lamps lit for whoever was missing and needed a place to wait, and that he had not been asked to light anything at all.
