Moonlit castle night scene on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a castle with several towers on a dark hill beside water, under a large glowing full moon and scattered stars. Small pale figures float on the water near the lower edge, and a black silhouette sits across the top of the design. The bold, smooth shading moves from pink and violet in the sky to deep blue in the water, with black used for the night background and outlines.

The sheets went across the mere every full moon, folded in the bottom of Tobias Greave's punt. He rowed them out himself, because nobody in Saltmarsh would take the oars after dark, and each month the pale shapes rose from the reeds to meet him, drifting alongside like boats without lamps. Ada watched from the inn step and counted them. Eleven that first winter. Thirteen the winter Tobias did not come back.

Nobody went out to look. The sea wall was rotten and the mere had a habit of keeping what it took. But on the thirteenth night Ada took her father's skiff and pulled across under the white moon, past the drowned church and the gateposts, until the hill rose black ahead with the castle on top. Every tower was lit from inside. The sky above them was pink and violet, like a bruise going yellow at the edges. A crow the size of a door sat on the ridge and watched her with the patience of a clerk.
Tobias was in the laundry, up to his elbows in the copper, and he did not look surprised to see her. "The lord stopped paying the tide years ago," he said, "and the dead won't go without clean linen. They need someone to carry the wet." He nodded at a basket of sheets gone grey with lake water. "You can stay, or you can take them back and tell the others I'm well."
Ada looked at the lamps going up one by one in the towers, then at the water shining below the wall. She lifted the basket onto her hip and carried it down to the boat. She has rowed it every full moon since. The sheets come back to the inn step dry as salt, and in the lamplight, on the corner of each one, she has stitched a small name in red thread, and the mere below her is always full of faces turned up to the moon, waiting for her to be on time.
