Colour neo-traditional tattoo of a village with red roofs and a church tower under a starry blue sky on a forearm, with a black and grey circular piece above it.

Village at dusk on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A village of houses with red roofs and a tall church tower sits along the lower part of the forearm, under a night sky with a star and a red-tinged cloud. Bold black outlines and soft gradient shading give the buildings and sky a dimensional, painterly finish. Warm orange glows and blue sky dominate the colour palette, while a dark black and grey circular tattoo with mountain and geometric shapes sits above.

Mind the lamp, love, it always wants to tip when the boat leans. Now, where was I? Ah, the village. You'll not find it on any chart the company printed, because the people who lived there shifted it every spring when the river rose, carrying their houses up the bank like snails with their shells on. Red roofs, every one, because the dyer sold red cheapest. The church tower never moved. Old Anselm rang its bell with one good leg and a stubborn heart, and nobody argued with him.

The autumn I'm telling you of, the bell went quiet. Anselm had gone up his ladder at dusk and not come down, and the villagers stood in the mud with their lanterns, calling up at the dark. Then Sela Brandt, who was nine and had sharp elbows, said the bell was only rope and wood, and the star over the mountain would show the way home just as well as a man did. So they all looked up. There it was, a single white star pricking through a sky gone the colour of a bruised plum, with a red cloud snagged beneath it like a shawl somebody had forgotten.

They didn't find Anselm that night. They found his lamp, though, still burning in the tower window, and a note pinned to the rope in his shaky hand: Ring it when you need to, and not before. So they hauled the rope together, the whole village pulling, and the bell spoke over the water so the boats could find the landing.

Every dusk after, somebody climbs up to light that lamp. It's the only job in the village nobody has ever had to be asked twice to do. Now mind your fingers on that rope, and give me the tiller, my arms are older than the river.
