Cat and treble clef on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a treble clef whose lower curl forms the body of a seated cat, with the tail trailing to the left. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits centrally on the back of the neck against a plain pale background.

The piano came over on the Tuesday boat, lashed under a tarpaulin like cargo nobody wanted to claim, and by Wednesday it stood in the schoolroom at Skerrow with its lid propped open and damp already blooming along the hinges. Mrs Gorse wanted it tuned for the harvest concert. I wanted it gone. It had been my mother's, and she had played it every evening until the winter she stopped.

The cat was already there when Mr Pell arrived with his tuning hammer. Nobody on the island claimed her. She belonged to the schoolroom the way the draught did, a grey thing with a white bib who slept on the warm sill and, when anyone struck a key, lifted her head and stared until the player apologised to the instrument. Mr Pell said she had perfect pitch. Mrs Gorse said she had perfect manners, which was less true.
On the last night before the tuner's boat, I sat down at the piano alone and played the one slow thing I still knew, with the lamp turning yellow in the wind off the water. The cat came down from the sill, stepped along the keys without sounding a single one, and settled on the fallboard with her tail curled round her feet. The tail ran off to the left in one long loop, and at its end she gave a small flick, as if marking time.
I kept playing. Her tail stayed where it was. On the morning boat I left the lid open and the window cracked, so the salt air could find the strings, and I told Mrs Gorse the cat was to have the seat by the keys from now on. Somebody had to keep her company.
