Small symbol tattoo on the nape

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A close view from behind shows a person with their hair in a bun, and a small black tattoo of an angular, abstract symbol sits on the skin at the nape of the neck. The linework is bold and solid with no visible shading, and the mark is set against pale skin with the shoulder and a bra strap at the edge of the frame. The photograph is monochrome, so the ink appears as a dark, high-contrast shape.

The last train has gone and the lost-property shelf is the only thing still lit on platform four. You sort the umbrellas first, because they always come in first, then the gloves, then the small things nobody comes back for. Tonight there is a brass ticket punch, bent at the handle, and a folded slip of paper with a mark drawn on it in biro: a loop closed off by a sharp diamond, like a bell someone tried to draw from memory.

Mr Fenwick, who ran the booking hall for thirty-one years before his knees gave out, told you the mark was an old signal code for a level crossing that had been shut in 1962. He said it with his cap on the counter, not looking up. You did not ask him how he knew. You had found enough in that drawer to understand that most of what the railway remembered had been passed along by people who were now gone.

On Thursday a woman came to the window asking for a bag left on the 6:14. She did not say what was inside. She stood with her hands flat on the ledge, and when you slid the carrier across she touched its corner the way you might touch a sleeping dog. You asked her to describe it. She said there was a mark on the inside flap, a sort of key that didn't open anything.

You checked the flap. The mark was there in faded marker, a loop and a diamond, exactly as the slip had drawn it. You handed her the bag and the slip together. She folded the paper twice, put it in her coat, and walked out under the departures board, past the clock that has run four minutes fast since before either of you was hired.
