Single line cat on the nape of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A continuous single-line outline of a seated cat, with pointed ears, a curved back and a tail curling at the base, sits on the nape of the neck. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading or fill. The photograph is black and white, framed from behind with the head and upper back visible and a framed tattoo flash sheet on the wall behind.

You are counting takings in the cashbox of the dodgems when the cat climbs the steps of the ticket booth as if it holds the lease. Nobody has fed it since Llandudno. It settles on the sill, folds its feet beneath it and studies you the way the fortune teller studies a customer who has paid for the full reading. Its ears are two sharp points. Its back runs in one unbroken curve from the top of its head down to a tail that curls at the base like a question nobody has asked yet.

Hal, the owner, says it came with the Dutch tent in '98 and never signed on. His rule is simple: a cat that rides the ghost train for free must work the ticket office. So you give it the stool, the pencil and the roll of pink raffle tickets. It sells none of them. Instead it sits through the whole of Thursday night with its tail tucked round its paws, watching the queue shuffle through the bulbs and the rattle of the painted skeletons, and not once does it flick an ear at the screaming.

On the last night at the ground outside Shrewsbury the generator dies. The lights go, the organ winds down with a groan, and the children drift toward the gate in the dark. You stand there holding a torch with no batteries. Then something pale moves along the top of the railings, and the cat walks ahead of you, pausing at each post so you can find the next one, until you reach the gravel of the car park and the vans glow white ahead.

In the morning the wagons roll out for Hereford. You find the cat on the cab step, already warm in the sun, its outline as neat as ever. When it drops into the long grass you realise you never once saw it leave the booth, and the pink tickets on the sill are still stacked, dry and unsold.
