Dilys had the late counter at Hale and Lusk Pledges, the one that ran from ten at night until the bells of St Ann's gave up counting the hours. The shop smelled of machine oil and wet wool. By half eleven the rain had turned the pavement on Cable Street to a mirror, and the only customers left were the ones who could not wait for morning.

The man who came in just before midnight set a small heart on the glass as if it might bruise. It was silver gone soft grey at the edges, ringed with a beaded border and a lace of tiny spikes, a flower furled at the top like a crown someone had forgotten to wear. Inside, a cat sat in three-quarter view, one ear bent forward as if listening for a key in the lock. "Not for sale," he said. "Just until Friday."

Dilys ran her loupe across the back. Someone had scratched a name there, Pim, and a date from the year her father had first opened the shop. She did not ask. She wrote the ticket for forty pounds and told him the interest would be fair. He signed with a hand that only shook at the end of his name, then walked out into the rain without an umbrella.

She set the frame in the window between a pair of wedding rings and a clock that had stopped at twenty past three. Under the streetlamp the cat's eyes caught the light and held it, patient and grey, watching the empty road as though it had been left there to keep the shop company until Friday came round again.
