Cat in glasses and flat cap on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon-style cat wearing round glasses, a flat cap and a bow tie sits behind a tumbler of amber drink, with its paw resting on the glass. Stacked books and pink and red flowers fill the lower left and left side of the design. Bold black outlines sit over soft shading and bright red, pink, brown and green colour, and the design wraps around the forearm.

The bookshop had been shut since Tuesday, so Mr Ambrose conducted his business from the bench under the snug window of the Anchor, where Mrs Dorrit let him sit with his paws on the rim of a tumbler and his spectacles pushed up to read. He was a grey and cream tabby of great dignity, and he wore a flat tweed cap he had never once removed, not even to sleep.

On the Thursday a stranger came in out of the wet with a carrier bag of paperbacks and set them down on the table. Dorrit watched him try to make friends with the cat, which nobody had ever managed. Ambrose lifted one paw from the glass, turned a page of a Chesterton he had read eleven times, and said without looking up, 'The gentleman wants the second shelf, not the bench.'
The stranger laughed, then stopped laughing. Inside the bag were three copies of a novel Ambrose had written years ago under a name nobody in the village knew, and the last chapter had been torn from each one. Ambrose had been waiting a long time for someone to come asking how it ended.
He took a slow swallow, set the glass down with the care of a magistrate, and said, 'Tell him the butler is innocent. The cap was never mine to give.' Then he slid the spectacles back down his nose and returned to the book, which Dorrit noticed was already open at the final page.
