Geometric skull on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Colour · Photo
A faceted, angular skull wearing a green headband, with a solid black circle for the eye, a single teal dot, and a row of stitch-like marks for the mouth. Bold black outlines separate flat panels of red, yellow, green and black, with a few lighter streaks across the facets. The design fills the calf against a plain white background.

Pull your chairs in, the lot of you, because the stove's kept going and I'm not telling this twice. Forty-one days out of Valparaiso on the Kittiwake, and the mate was a man called Oswin Lusk who could not look at a straight line without wanting to break it into pieces. He drew the ship's charts that way. Coastlines came out like smashed crockery. The captain thought him mad and gave him the bosun's paint pot to keep him quiet.

So he painted the hull. Not the sea-green the owners wanted, but panels of red and yellow and a green like wet leaves, every edge cut hard with black. Then one night in the doldrums, when the wind had died and the water lay like oiled slate, he painted a face on the prow. Angular, all planes, no softness anywhere. A green band across the brow for a headband, a black disc for one eye, and a single teal dot where the other should have been, as if it had winked out of the paint and gone off looking for better work.
The men grumbled that the thing had a grin like a stitched sack. Lusk only said the mouth was shut, and that was the whole joke. By morning the wind came back from the south, and it never once blew us onto the reef the charts had promised. Some say the face saw it first. I say the mate had simply learned to see the rocks as shapes, and shapes were easier to dodge.
