His sister had sent it from Lanzarote with a paper parasol jammed in the rim and a note in capitals: YOU ARE ALLOWED A HOLIDAY TOO, DOUG. He had laughed at that for most of a week. Nobody on Skerrymor took holidays. The nearest palm tree was a rumour, and the sun set most evenings behind a wall of wet cloud, a dull coin dropped in the sea.

Then the fog came in off the Minch, thick as wool, and the foghorn began its complaint. He wound the clockwork, checked the mantle, and watched the beam sweep out across nothing. Through the glass on the sill, the painted palms stood black against a red disc, and the waves in the bottom of the bowl rocked in time with the swell below him. For the first time in years the light felt like someone else's job.

Out in the murk a lantern wavered, then swung toward the flash. He counted the seconds between each sweep, the way his father had taught him, and heard the boat's engine cough and steady. When the crew finally bumped against the landing at dawn, the skipper looked up at the gallery and saw a man in a wet jumper raising a cocktail glass, a little red umbrella standing in it like a flag of surrender.
