Celtic knot shamrock tattoo
Black and grey · Photo
A three-leaf shamrock formed from interlaced Celtic knotwork, with each leaf and the stem drawn as looping bands. The bands are shaded with grey tones that give them a raised, ribbon-like depth against the dark background gaps. The design fills the frame on plain pale skin, with the stem pointing downwards.

The lamp went out at the third bend, and for a while Tom Garrity lay still in the wet dark, counting his breaths the way his mother counted beads. Above him the roof ticked and settled like a clock someone had forgotten to wind. Past the fall, a pick was knocking, slow and even, which meant Eamon Doyle was alive and still working the face, a man who never stopped to wonder whether he should.

At home in the terrace on Easington Lane, his mother kept a thing pressed inside her Bible: a shamrock her father had carried from Mayo, cut from green ribbon and worked into three loops and a stem. Tom had asked her once where the ends were. She had laughed and said the knot had no ends, that was why it held, every loop running over the next so the luck could never slip out at the join.
He found the wall with his palms and followed it on his knees, tugging the spare cord from his belt. Eamon's knocking grew louder, stopped, then started again, the signal they had agreed in the cage years ago. Tom tied the cord into a loop, then another, weaving it over and under the way his mother had shown him at the kitchen table, until he had three leaves in his fist and no clear idea what he was making.
The rescue lamps found them at dusk on the Saturday. Eamon had a split lip and a grin. When the cord was cut away at the pit top, Tom turned the little knotted thing over in the light and tried to find where it began, and could not. He put it in his pocket anyway and walked home to show his mother, who only nodded, as if she had known all along.
