Compass rose with lilies on skin
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose sits at the centre of the design, with a ring behind it and a shaded hub. Lily-like flowers, buds and leaves wrap around the compass, with fine swirling lines extending outwards. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey with soft shading on the petals and points, and it is framed against plain skin.

The master would not let me touch the brass compass until I could draw the thirty-two winds from memory, so I spent the spring of my fourteenth year copying them onto wax tablets in the cellar of the Pharos library. Zephyr from the west, Boreas from the north, each with its little name crowded beside the point of its star. My hand kept wandering. Every time I finished a wind, I scratched a lily into the corner of the tablet, a flower I had seen on the garden wall of a gardener's house on the road down to the harbour.

Eudoxa, who ground the ink and said nothing for months, found me out in the fourth week. She didn't scold. She tipped the tablet towards the lamp and ran her thumb over the petals I had cut beside Notos. 'A sailor cannot steer by a flower,' she said. 'Nor can he steer by a wind he has never felt.' Then she took the stylus from my fingers and drew a second ring around my star, fine and wavering, the way the sea looks when the current turns beneath a calm surface.
When the master died that autumn, I inherited the compass, the cellar and his debts. On the first clear night I carried the brass bowl up to the roof, set it on the parapet and watched the needle shiver and settle north. Below me the harbour lamps were going out one by one. I traced the eight main points with my finger on the cold stone, then the lilies I had drawn in the margins of every tablet I had kept. I left them on the chart, petals turned towards the open water, and went down to find more ink.
