Green tribal spiral tattoo on skin

Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo is a bold tribal-style spiral built from heavy black blackwork-like shapes with curled tapering ends, filled with green ink. The linework is smooth and solid, with the green fills showing slight variation in tone and some lighter patches. The tight close-up crop fills the frame with the design on reddened skin, with the spiral sweeping diagonally from upper left to lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The river at Halden Ford has never once run straight, and my grandmother said that was the only honest thing about the border. Where the current meets the stone shelf it turns on itself, a slow green whorl that pulls a boat round before the oarsman has decided anything. I learned to read it before I learned to read customs forms, sitting in the stern while my uncle shouted at the guards in two languages.

The men who came to the ford in the wet season always asked about the spiral. Was it a whirlpool, a lock, a warning? I told them it was a hook. You sit in the curl long enough and it carries you back to the bank you left, however hard you pull. Most of them laughed. One, a surveyor with a leather case and a cough, did not laugh. He wanted to know which side the water favoured, and I said the side with the lamp.

The winter my uncle drowned, the surveyor came back alone with a map that showed no river at all, only a line drawn firm across the blank paper. He asked me to take him over. I rowed him into the green curl and felt the boat start to turn, and I did not fight it. We came out on the same bank, soaked and laughing at nothing, and he folded the map into his coat.

He left a page of it on the thwart when he went. I still have it. Every crossing since, I have rowed one slow circle before landing, so the river knows I am keeping an account of who it has returned.
