Celtic knotwork emblem on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black tattoo of a pointed, triangular emblem sits on the forearm, with a hooded shape cut into its lower edge. The outline and interlaced knotwork inside are rendered in solid black ink with clean, even lines and some fine detail in the braided bands. The image is a close, straight-on photograph with plain background and no colour.

The stranger came up the orchard lane the week the windfalls started, a long grey coat and a hood pulled low, and my grandfather stopped mid-sentence at the press as if someone had struck a bell. He did not ask the man's business. He only took the sharpening stone from the shelf and set it on the trestle beside the cider barrels, which in our family meant a visitor was to be watched.

The man wanted nothing that season but to walk the rows at dusk, counting the trees under his breath in a language I half knew from the tinkers who used to camp by the brook. He wore a slim blade on his hip, its edge notched like a crescent moon, and the hilt was bound in braided cord that reminded me of the knots my grandmother stitched into the cuffs of her Sunday shirts. I followed him for three evenings with a torch I was not allowed to switch on.
On the fourth night I found him kneeling under the Scrumper's Gold tree, palm flat on the grass. "Rot starts in the roots," he said without turning. "You have to listen before you cut." He lifted a wormy apple, bit it, and handed me the rest. It was sweet. Then he told me the trees had been planted by someone who knew the land would outlast them, and that the knots carved into the old gateposts were a promise, not a decoration.
At first light the lane was empty and the stone sat wet on the trestle. My grandfather ran his thumb along the groove the stranger had worn into it and said nothing at all. In the dew under the Scrumper's Gold there were three crescent-shaped scuffs leading away between the rows, and beside them lay an apple, bitten clean on one side, that nobody had bothered to pick up.
