The castle at Hollin Rise had lost its roof before any living grandmother was born, but the crescent window above the gate still held its shape, and the village kept a rule about it. Each dark of the moon someone carried oil up the hill and lit the iron holder that sat in the arch, three cups on one stem, because the old people said the marsh below was patient and only the light kept it in its bed.

The year Wenna took the job she was the miller's youngest and nobody else would climb in the wind. Halfway up she met a tinker sitting on the wall beside a cart of cracked pots. He watched her hitch her skirt and said the window was a moon that had been asked to hold a flower. She laughed at him. He pointed instead at the flagstones of the chapel floor, where a lotus had been cut, every petal pitted with small holes that the rain had filled. "Count them," he said, "and you'll know how many nights the marsh will let you have."

She counted until the wind came round the tower and the flame in the iron cups guttered and died. Her oil was spent and rain was driving sideways across the gate. Then she remembered the tinker's cracked pots and understood that the cups were bowls. She ran down for the rain barrel, filled the three cups, and set them under the moon-shaped arch to catch whatever light the sky still owned. The water took a pale shine from the breaks in the cloud and threw it out across the reeds.

Below, the sheep that had been wandering towards the drowned fields turned and climbed. In the morning the marsh lay flat and grey, and the window above the gate was dry and bright with dew. Wenna never told the village that water had saved them. She simply kept a bowl of rainwater beside the oil from then on, and it is said that on dark nights the reeds below the castle lie quiet.
